A Few Tips for Checking Recommendations

1. Accept only written recommendations.

Ask the candidate for a written recommendation from a previous employer so that you can conduct a background check on their work experience. Verification is necessary so that you and the previous employer are responsible for the correct information contained in the letter of recommendation.

2. Check the position at the previous place of work.

When you are going to check the information provided in the letter of recommendation over the phone, make sure that you are speaking with the most suitable person for this. Ask if your candidate actually worked for the specified organization and if he correctly stated his previous position. This check may seem too simple to you, but this step will immediately save you from deceitful letters of recommendation.

 


3. Set the rapport.

 

Before contacting by phone, faxing or emailing a candidate, check the data on their resume and letters of recommendation. Contact the former employer of the candidate, give for verification the name of your candidate, the position indicated by him at the previous place of work and the telephone number. During the conversation, emphasize that you are only interested in information about the candidate that is directly related to the person's work activity. In addition, explain that the employer is protected by so - called “qualification immunity” when making a recommendation. This means that the employer is protected from any defamation that may be contained in the words of a former employee.

4. Confidentiality.

Recommendations are given confidentially, in addition, letters of recommendation should also be kept in a place with limited access. If the recommendation fell into the hands of a third party who should not have had access to this document, the protection of the “principle of limitation” is lost. Maintain confidentiality!
